Medicare Part D

Definition

Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage. It is offered through private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

More Detail

You can get Part D as a standalone plan added to Original Medicare, or as part of a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage (MAPD). Part D plans have a formulary — a list of covered drugs. Premiums, deductibles, and copays vary by plan. If you do not sign up when you are first eligible and do not have other creditable drug coverage, you may owe a late enrollment penalty.
